Clean up your social media feed

Let’s be real — we spend a lot of time on social media. Whether it’s for keeping connected, getting inspired, or just killing time, our feeds have a pretty big influence on how we feel.

Social media can be a great tool for us, but it also means navigating our way through lots of additional noise and opinions before we find helpful and factual information. If we're exposed to unhelpful or challenging content on a regular basis, it can also leave us feeling stressed, worried or even hopeless.

If your feed is leaving you feeling more drained than uplifted by what you see, it might be time for a digital clean-up. Think of it like spring cleaning, but for your brain! Here’s a few suggestions that could help tidy up your feed and keep you in a good head space.

Take in What You're Seeing

Next time you're scrolling, take a moment to ask yourself:

  • How do I feel about this post?
  • Is it helpful or unhelpful?

You don't have to do anything straight away, but allow yourself to really notice what's in your feed.

Use the 'Unfollow', ' See Less' or 'Mute' function

Take control of what makes it on to your feed.

  • Unfollow accounts that no longer align with your values or interests.
  • Mute accounts or people that you might not be ready to unfollow but need a break from.
  • Let the algorithm know what you don't want to see by using the See Less function where you can.

Follow What (or Who) You Love

Be intentional about the content you want to see. These could include:

  • pages or people that inspire you
  • content that makes you laugh
  • accounts that align with your interests and values
  • pages or people that connect you to your culture

Turn Your Notifications Off

We're more likely to open our social media apps when our phone notifies us of any new posts, likes or messages come through.

Give yourself a break and turn this function off, even just for a short time.  Your brain will thank you for it!
